VPS on a Tenda router

There’s one client for two protocols here, the “PPTP/L2TP Client”. VanyaVPS needs its PPTP mode, which comes down to one form and a green button at the end. PPTP is an old protocol and weaker than OpenVPN, but Tenda leaves no other choice.

Where the client is

Go to tendawifi.com, or to 192.168.0.1 if the name doesn’t load. Unless someone changed it, the admin password is printed on the sticker underneath. Pick “VPN” on the left and then the “PPTP/L2TP Client” tile.

Three tiles, you need the right one. PPTP Server next to it does the reverse and lets people reach the router from outside.

Then press the green “Connect”. Once the status changes to “Connected”, you have a working VPS on a Tenda router, and the whole home goes online through our server.

Newer models and an odd label

On newer models the client is the same, just buried deeper. The RX12 Pro manual puts it under More → Network Settings → VPN. We couldn’t find manuals for the RX12L Pro and AX12 Pro, so check the same place for the PPTP/L2TP Client item. The Tenda manuals we read list no OpenVPN client, so there’s still only one way in.

Don’t worry about the “Obtained L2TP Client IP Address” line in PPTP mode. The label is shared by both protocols, and the address in it was handed out by our server.

Encryption and other doubts

Should MPPE be on?

Yes. Your account lists 128-bit MPPE for PPTP, and without MPPE the data in a PPTP tunnel isn’t encrypted at all. If your form has no such switch, leave it as it is.

It never says Connected

Check the address, login and password for typos. If they’re fine, PPTP may be blocked on your network. Switching to OpenVPN isn’t possible here, so choose a different country’s server in your account, and if that doesn’t help, install the app instead.

One plan for every room

Tenda connects on any plan at no extra cost, and your phones use the app on the same subscription once you leave home.

If it does not work for you, we refund the payment under our refund policy.
