VPS on a Keenetic router

These routers get their own OpenVPN file in your account, labelled “for Keenetic”. The login and password are already written into it, so the router only has to read it. PPTP is there too, but it’s less secure and only worth it if your provider blocks OpenVPN.

The “for Keenetic” file

  1. Add the OpenVPN component

Keenetic installs it separately. In General system settings, open Component options, tick “OpenVPN client and server” and install. The router downloads an update and reboots.

  2. Download the file

In your account’s Router section every server has two links, “Download .OVPN” and “for Keenetic”. Take the second one. The regular file has no login inside, and Keenetic can’t ask for it separately.

  3. Paste it into a new connection

Go to Internet → Other connections and press “Create connection” in the VPN connections block. Choose OpenVPN as the Type (protocol). Open the downloaded file in any text editor, copy everything and paste it into the “OpenVPN configuration” field.

  4. Save it and switch it on

The connection shows up in the list. Flip its switch and wait for the status under the name to say it’s ready.

The PPTP fallback

It starts from the same “Create connection” button, only the type is PPTP. The server address is the IP from your account, and the username and password are your router login. Leave authentication on Auto and keep data encryption ticked, your account lists MPPE 128-bit for PPTP.

Ready doesn’t mean traffic goes through it

Keenetic sends devices out through whichever connection sits higher on the connection priorities page, also under Internet. Drag your VanyaVPS connection above the provider’s, and check that the connection’s own settings allow it to be used for internet access. Otherwise the status stays green while websites keep opening directly.

A VPS on a Keenetic router doesn’t have to cover everyone. On the device binding tab you can create a separate profile with the VPS on top and move, say, just the TV into it. Everything else stays in the main profile and goes through the provider.

Higher in the list means higher priority. Connection names can be anything, and the countries on the screenshot come from our old guide, not today’s server list.

When Keenetic acts up

The log mentions auth-user-pass and nothing connects

The router got the regular file. Keenetic doesn’t prompt for a password, it needs the “for Keenetic” version with the login written into the file. Download it and replace the text in the OpenVPN configuration field.

I issued a new password. Does the file change too?

Yes. The old password stops working in about two minutes, and that’s the one inside the file. Download the “for Keenetic” file again. For PPTP, just update the password field.

Neither option connects

Some Russian providers block both OpenVPN and PPTP. The file holds two addresses of one server, UDP and TCP, and the router tries them in turn. Switch to a server in a different country. If nothing gets through, only the app on your phones and computers will help with that provider.

Can I use WireGuard instead?

No. For routers VanyaVPS offers only OpenVPN and PPTP, and there are no WireGuard servers for them. If you need a protocol that’s harder to spot and block, the app has one.

Plans with the router included

There’s no separate charge for a VPS on a Keenetic router. Every plan has it, next to the apps.

If it does not work for you, we refund the payment under our refund policy.
